Former international cricketer Imran Khan has led a chaotic convoy of thousands from Lahore to the Pakistani capital, Islamabad, seeking new polls after he was removed from power earlier this year.
According to reports, former Pakistani prime minister Imran Khan has been shot in the leg during an election campaign rally in Lahore. A supporter died in the incident while nine others were injured.
The former international cricketer has been leading a caravan of thousands since Friday from Pakistan’s Punjab province to its capitol, Islamabad, demanding new parliamentary polls following his ouster in April this month by a no-confidence motion.
WHAT HAPPENED AT THE RALLY?
“There was a man in the first row who had an automatic weapon. He shot at us,” he says. “Everyone in the first row was killed.”
People in the crowd who were trying to stop the attacker managed to grab his gun. Videos from the ground show the scene.
Imran Khan has been admitted to a Lahore medical facility. His party, the PTI, says he is receiving treatment there.
A video shows Imran Khan being transported by ambulance after he was shot at an event in Pakistan.
A second video from the scene shows an attacker being overpowered and held down by one of Imran Khan’s security guards. Following his arrest, he reportedly told police: “I wanted [Imran] Khan dead because he had misled the nation.”
Four PTI leaders including one of its parliamentary secretaries were injured in an armed assault at their office in Islamabad. A leader said he was martyred.
Both the country’s prime minister and its president have denounced the attack.
“A heinous assassination attempt on the brave Imran Khan. I am thankful that he was saved but seriously wounded with a few bullets in the leg and hopefully not critical. This attack is shocking and alarming. May Allah grant him full recovery and to everyone who was injured,” Pakistan’s President Dr Arif Alivi said in a tweet.
“I condemn this act of shooting at PTI Chairman Imran Khan. I have ordered the interior minister for an immediate report on this matter. I hope that he recovers quickly from his injuries.”
