Imran Khan expelled from Parliament: Pakistani media reported that former Prime Minister Imran Khan has been “de-seated” from the National Assembly, the country’s lower House of Parliament, after being disqualified by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), the governmental organization responsible for running elections in Pakistan.
Since the enormous floods last summer killed 1,725 people, displaced hundreds of thousands, and created an increase in malaria and other flood-related ailments, this action is certain to worsen ongoing political strife in the impoverished Islamic country.
Fawad Chaudhry, a top aide in Khan’s Tehreek-e-Insaf party, has spoken out against the decision and called on Khan’s supporters to take to the streets in protest. He assured us that Khan is free to serve as party leader. Khan’s attorneys have refuted the accusations, saying their client “purchased back” the gifts from the state and then sold part of them in a permissible manner.
One more top party official, Shah Mahmood Qureshi, has already declared that the party will appeal the commission’s ruling.
Earlier on Friday, famed lawyer Balkh Ser Khosa said that Khan was disqualified because he illegally sold official gifts handed to him by other countries when he was in charge. Khosa also claimed that Khan had concealed the money he had made from these transactions from the IRS.
Police had been stationed in large numbers on Friday outside the Islamabad office of the electoral commission, where results were being tabulated, in case Khan supporters demonstrated. Major government facilities, including the election commission, are surrounded by paramilitary personnel in what is known as the “Red Zone,” which has been mostly sealed off to traffic.
