Monster Movie Review: Mohanlal plays the role of Lucky Singh in Monster. After the break, the rest of the movie is a struggle, and there is no payoff at the end. The fact that the primary villain in Monster is homosexual is the plot’s most surprising turn. The film Monster is one that is nasty, horrible, and horrible. The film’s screenwriter, Udaykrishna, and director, Vysakh, don’t have the foggiest clue about the issues that members of the LGBTQ community confront in today’s society.
When some mainstream filmmakers and scriptwriters all of a sudden begin to talk about a “subject that has not been talked about much in our cinema,” which often means a film that touches upon LGBTQIA+ issues, one is now filled with a sense of dread because of their track record of negative portrayal of these communities in the past.
This is due to the fact that these filmmakers and scriptwriters have portrayed these communities in a negative light in the past. It is only possible for a viewer to reach these parts of the movie where the screenwriter attempts to be progressive if they are able to make it through the interminable first hour of the film.
This first hour is the prolonged time slot that has been set aside for Mohanlal’s character, Lucky Singh, to regale the audience with his Punjabi lines (a mishmash of “Balle balle” and “Soni Kudi”) and heaps of humor, which is most commonly used as a pretext for crude double entendres. Filmmaker Vysakh and scriptwriter Udaykrishna, who had previously gifted Mohanlal one of the biggest hits of his career with Pulimurugan (which had its share of issues), team up yet again for Monster, where they try their hand at the thriller genre, with a twist that appears to be progressive.
The film stars Mohanlal, who has had one of the most successful careers in the history of Indian cinema. The portrayal of LGBTQIA+ characters in the film does not contribute to the process of normalizing LGBTQIA+ people in mainstream cinema; rather, it contributes to further stigmatizing LGBTQIA+ people. This must be expressed at the risk of disclosing plot spoilers.
