Madhya Pradesh Will Implement Uniform Civil Code: Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has announced that the state will implement a uniform civil code. This will bring the state in line with the rest of the country, which has already implemented such a code.
The announcement was made at a function held to mark Madhya Pradesh Day. “There are people who grab tribal land by marrying a tribal girl. Today, I have come here to make people aware of such practices,” Chouhan said. He added that the implementation of the uniform civil code will help protect the rights of tribal girls and women. It will also help prevent child marriages and dowry deaths.
What is Uniform Civil Code?
Uniform Civil Code is a set of codified laws which apply uniformly to all citizens regardless of their religion or caste. It is an attempt to codify the personal laws governing marriage, divorce, inheritance and other aspects of family life in India. The code does not currently exist in India, but has been proposed by various political parties and commissions over the years. The most recent attempt was made by the Law Commission of India in 2018.
