The Karnataka High Court has stayed a lower court’s order directing Twitter to block the Congress party’s account. The lower court had made the order after a complaint was filed by a music label accusing the Congress of using songs from a copyrighted film without permission.
The High Court has ordered the Congress to remove all copyrighted material from its social media platforms by tomorrow, after which the stay will be lifted.
The court was hearing a complaint filed by a music label accusing the Congress of using songs from the film KGF 2 without permission.
In its order, the court said that “the right to freedom of speech and expression guaranteed under the Constitution cannot be curtailed or abridged on the ground that somebody’s copyrighted work is being used without permission”. The court also noted that blocking the account would have a “chilling effect” on free speech.
