Delhi Air Pollution: Over 5,800 Violations Of GRAP Stage 3 Transport Curbs Issued- Elvowire

Delhi Air Pollution: The Delhi traffic police has issued over 5,800 challans for violation of transport curbs under GRAP Stage 3. The traffic police stopped or issued challans to 5,882 vehicles for violations till 6 am on Friday after the city government restricted the movement of BS-III petrol and BS-IV diesel four-wheelers.

Under the GRAP Stage 3, only cars with odd-numbered registration plates are allowed on the roads on odd dates, and those with even-numbered registration plates are allowed on even dates. Two-wheelers are exempted from the restriction.

The traffic police have also deployed teams at all major crossings to check for violations and have put up banners and hoardings informing people about the restrictions.

Delhi air pollution has been a matter of concern for a long time now. The problem has been aggravated by the increased number of vehicles on the road, use of generators and other polluting sources. The situation is so bad that the Supreme Court had to intervene and order measures to be taken to improve the quality of air in Delhi.

The court asked the Central Pollution Control Board to prepare an action plan to tackle Delhi air pollution. The board submitted its report which suggested a host of measures including closing down of polluting industries, banning construction activities and imposing restrictions on the use of private vehicles. However, not much progress has been made on these fronts so far.

The situation is alarming as Delhi air pollution is causing health problems for people living in the city. There have been reports of cases of respiratory problems, asthma and even cancer due to exposure to polluted air. The government needs to take urgent steps to improve the quality of air in Delhi before it’s too late.
