With temperatures rising at an alarming rate due to global warming, world leaders are meeting in Egypt to agree on measures to curb greenhouse gas emissions. However, the odds of reaching an accord are slim.
The 27th annual conference of parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP) will take place in the Egyptian resort town of Sharm el-Shiekh from November 29 to December 10, 2015. It has been called “African COP” by environmental activists who hope it will be a place where Africa’s voice is heard at international talks on global warming.
Since its first iteration in Berlin in 2015, the United Nations Climate Change Conference has rotated annually between the five UN classified countries: Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Latin America and the Carribean, and Western Europe. Around 45,000 registered COP25 attendees representing parties, UN and Regional Organisations, businesses, and the science community are expected to attend.
WHAT IS THE AGENDA FOR COP 27?
COP27 will follow a weak deal, but one that was agreed upon at COP26 Glasgow Summit to limit global warming to 1. 5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. The agenda at COP 27 will be to implement the deal, which has been a long-term source of worry.
At COP26, countries agreed for the first time ever to phase down coal production and cut other forms of pollution. They also pledged to stop subsidizing carbon intensive industries and to cap global temperature rise.
The United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD) is taking place in South Africa starting today. It is an international meeting where governments discuss ways to address global challenges including poverty, hunger, disease, inequality, environmental degradation, and conflict. Many people believe that one of the most important issues at the conference will be the discussion of the so-called “loss and damage” caused by extreme weather events.
The United States has indicated that its priority should be on funding other sources of financing for developing countries and reforming multilateral development banks so they are more responsive to the global warming crisis.
At COP26, governments pledged to “revise and reinforce” their national climate action plan by December 31st, but only 24 countries out of 195 have revised their action plan.
It seems there might be some new energy in Egypt. Australia’s newly elected prime minister has pledged to slash greenhouse gas emissions by at least 43 percent by 2030, compared to 2005 levels. Other countries including Chile, Mexico, Turkey and Vietnam are also expected soon to unveil their own climate change pledges.
INDIA AT COP27
India has stressed that it will focus on taking actions in climate finance, technology transfers, and capacities building at the summit. Its delegation to COP27 will include Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate change, Bhupender Yadav
“The target for $100 billion of annual climate financing by 2020 was not met. There remains a lot of work to achieve this ambitious target.”
India will support a comprehensive approach to climate change that addresses adaptation, loss and damage, and progress on both of these issues will be complementary.
“We cannot avoid a catastrophic situation unless both the developed and the undeveloped countries agree to a historic pact.”
The secretary general of the United Nations has warned that the horrors of the war in eastern Ukraine should not put global efforts to combat global warming on hold.
“Doubling down on fossil fuel use isn’t the answer,” Trump tweeted. “Only path to secure energy for future generations lies in accelerating the clean energy transition.” As Europe reels from its own energy woes, the world’s largest economies are set to sign off on a major climate deal — one that may be altered by the U.S.’s decision to pull out.
Recent reports show that greenhouse gas emissions continue to rise at an increasing rate, but they’re not yet high enough to cause global warming to accelerate beyond 2 degrees Celsius above preindustrial levels.
