Congress Presidential Polls: With the Congress set to elect its next president later this year, party leader Shashi Tharoor has said that some aspects of the process suggest an “uneven playing field”. In an interview to Hindustan Times, Tharoor said that while he was not questioning the legitimacy of the internal polls, he was concerned about “the way in which they are being conducted”.
“I have no quarrel with the idea of having elections within the party. My only worry is about the way in which they are being conducted… it seems as if there is an uneven playing field,” he said. Tharoor’s comments come amid reports that a section of Congress leaders are unhappy with the way the presidential polls are being handled. There have been demands for more transparency in the process and for a level-playing field for all contenders.
The presidential race in Indian National Congress (INC) is heating up with three main contenders – Shashi Tharoor and Mallikarjun Kharge. Both have been campaigning aggressively and are seeking support from the party’s various factions. At this stage, it is difficult to say who is leading the polls as no official numbers have been released. However, media reports suggest that Rahul Gandhi has emerged as the frontrunner and is expected to win the contest comfortably.
Mallikarjun Kharge has the support of many influential leaders from Karnataka. However, it seems that Shashi Tharoor’s popularity among rank-and-file party workers and his stature giving him an edge over his rivals. If he does indeed win the INC presidency, it would mark a significant shift in Indian politics with young leader taking charge of one of its oldest parties.
