According to an international study conducted by a Rutgers expert comparing new and older medicines for complicated urinary tract infections, a new medicine combination has been found to be more effective, particularly against chronic, drug-resistant infections.
Researchers at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine found that patients treated for either complicated UTIs or AP were more likely to be cured if they received a drug cocktail containing two antibiotics instead of one.
“This new antibiotic is superior to the traditional treatment for bacterial infections.”
“We’re really excited about this new approach.”
KAYE added this drug combination also helps fight an often dangerous type of bacterial illness caused by germs called extended spectrum beta lactamases (ESBL). These germs cannot be killed effectively by most conventional antibiotics, including penicillin and cephalosprin.
“We’re looking for drugs that are active against antibiotic-resistant strains of E. coli, and we found this drug combination to be highly effective.”
The results showed that the new antibiotic regimen was successful in treating bacterial infections in 80 percent of cases compared to 60 percent success rate for the old one.
Among the 20 percent of people who had an infection caused by extended spectrum beta lactamase (ESBL) bacteria, 73 percent of those given ceftriaxone and metronidazole achieved a clinical response, compared to 51 percent of those given imipenem/cilastatin and amikacin.
Cefepime is a third-gen cephalosporine that was approved for use back in the 90s. It’s generic and available at most pharmacies. Enmetazobacmam, an experimental new antibiotic made by the French pharmaceutical company Allecra, is a “bla-lactam” inhibitor which means it targets the type of enzyme produced by ESBL producing organisms. The combination has been given Qualified Infectious Disease product status and fast track approval by the FDA.
