In a statement released today, Gabbard said, “It is with deep regret that I announce my departure from the Democratic Party. After many years of working within the party to effect positive change, I have come to the conclusion that the party’s values no longer line up with my own.” Gabbard went on to say that she will continue to serve as an elected official as an independent and will work with people of all political persuasions to build a brighter future for America.
Who is Tulsi Gabbard? Tulsi Gabbard is an American politician of the Democratic Party serving as the U.S. Representative for Hawaii’s 2nd congressional district since 2013. She was also a vice chair of the Democratic National Committee from 2013 to 2016. Born in Leloaloa, American Samoa, Gabbard is a graduate of Hawaii Pacific University and the Accelerated Officer Candidate School. She served in a field medical unit of the Hawaii Army National Guard in a combat zone in Iraq from 2004 to 2005 and was later deployed to Kuwait.
