Toyota launches second hybrid vehicle in India: Toyota Motor Corp on Friday launched its second hybrid car in India, a seven-seat people-carrier, as part of a broader strategy to double-down on the sale of electrified vehicles in emerging markets.
The new Toyota Hybrid SUV, which will go on sale next month, is based on the company’s global Camry Hybrid model and comes.
With this launch, Toyota is hoping to gain a foothold in the burgeoning Indian hybrid market, which is currently dominated by Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd.
The move comes as part of Toyota’s wider push to increase sales of electrified vehicles in emerging markets, as it looks to meet its goal of selling 5.5 million hybrid and electric vehicles globally by 2030.
Speaking at the launch event, Toyota Motor Corp President Akio Toyoda said that the company was committed to reducing its environmental impact and that electrified cars would play a key role in achieving that goal.
“We want to popularize hybrid cars in India and make them mainstream,” he said. “This is in line with our vision of creating a sustainable society.”
