Total lunar eclipse on November 8: If you’re up for a late-night or early-morning sky show, mark your calendar for Tuesday. That’s when the moon will turn a beautiful red during a total lunar eclipse. The entire event will last about four hours from start to finish.
The eclipse will be visible throughout North America in the predawn hours, and across Asia, Australia and the rest of the Pacific after sunset. Striking out altogether, Africa, the Middle East and most of Europe will have to wait until 2025.
A total lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth lines up between the sun and the moon, casting a shadow on the moon’s surface. The last time this happened was on January 31, 2018. The next one after May 15, 2022 won’t happen until 2026. So enjoy this rare event while you can!
A total lunar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes through the Earth’s shadow, obscuring it completely. This can only happen when the Sun, Earth, and Moon are perfectly aligned, with the Earth in between. When this happens, the Moon will darken and take on a reddish hue as it is illuminated by sunlight filtered through the Earth’s atmosphere.
Total lunar eclipses are relatively rare events; they only happen about once every two to three years. But when they do occur, they are truly spectacular sights to behold. If you want to see a total lunar eclipse for yourself, be sure to mark your calendar and make plans to view it from a location where you’ll have a clear view of the sky.
