The Ministry of External Affairs has described the deaths of six Indian captives in Pakistan over the past nine months as “alarming.”
Six Indian prisoners who had completed their jail terms, died in Pakistan in the last nine months. India has raised the “alarming” issue with Islamabad, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Friday. MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said five of the six Indians were fishermen and asserted that Pakistan is “duty-bound” to ensure the safety and security of all Indian prisoners.In recent years, there have been an increasing number of deaths among fishermen.
Five of the six Indian prisoners who died in Pakistani custody were fishermen. They served out their sentences, but Pakistan held them against their will, said MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi at a press conference. “These occurrences are concerning.
Our high commission in Islamabad has brought up the issue. According to Bagchi, Pakistan has a responsibility to maintain the security and safety of Indian prisoners. The MEA made its announcement on the same day that Pakistani authorities claimed to have prevented six Indian fishermen from drowning close to the international maritime border between the two neighbors.
