Thank God Movie Review: Film requires supernatural intervention to survive

Thank God Movie Review : Elvowire Rating- 1.5/ 5 Star.

The film is fun when it’s funny but gets really sad (not good, melancholic sad) when it gets sad. It follows the traditional and trademarked Indra Kumar formula of getting you emotionally inclined towards the narrative even when you just want to have some light fun. It’s a crowd pleaser with its comedy, for sure, but the real question is: is that enough to attract the audience to this changing phase of cinema?

“Thank God” marks Indra Kumar’s return to Bollywood after a sizeable gap. The film is the official remake of the Norwegian film “Sorte Kugler”. Ayaan Kapoor (Malhotra) crashes into a car, and finds himself in front of a man who introduces himself as CG, aka Chitragupt (Devgn). CG is judge-jury-executioner and chief inquisitor, all rolled into one.

Siddharth Malhotra stars in Indra Kumar’s Thank God.” The film is about a man who wakes up in a realm between life and death after a car crash. It’s an intriguing concept, reimagining the afterlife as a game show where each soul is a contestant given the chance to play the game of life to prove they deserve to live.

Siddharth Malhotra’s performance is a synthetic, strictly surface-level exercise. His stilted stoic-ness ensures that he just isn’t able to do justice to the film’s animated tonality. The blaring background score and squeaky sound effects are required to do most of the dramatic and comedic heavy lifting.

I did enjoy some of the gags, like when Ayan mistakenly tells a young boy that he’s adopted or later when he’s stuck in a lift with an annoying man who’s barking down the phone to his wife. For each shortcoming, CG creates a hypothetical scenario for Ayan to prove he can be better. CG’s entire system of judgment doesn’t seem to make any sense. The film also seems to act like all of Ayan’s flaws are new and not something he’s always had. While the film is watchable, Thank God it is forgettable storytelling of the first.
