Prime Minister Narendra Modi said “no person or relation is above nation” and showed us that we should live the mantra of “Nation First” instead of nepotism and dynasty. Some examples were taken from the life of Lachit Borphukan, who embodied this ideology.
In his speech today, he remarked that the celebrations for the 400th anniversary of Lachit Borphukan’s birth had come to an end.
The Prime Minister of Assam released an Assamese-language book written in honor of a previous Assamese culture hero.
In line with the Prime Minister’s mission to honor heroes who are often forgotten, the occasion is celebrating the 400th birthday of Lachit Borphukan. Lachit Borphukan was a famous general for the Royal Army of the Ahom Kingdom of Assam who helped defeat the Mughals and prevented their expansion under Aurangzeb.
The Prime Minister addressed the gathering and began by expressing his admiration for the land of Assam, which gave brave sons like Veer Lachit. “We bow to the brave Veer Lachit on his 400th birthday. He played a pivotal role in preserving the culture of Assam,” he said.
Prime Minister Modi said, “India is celebrating the 400th anniversary of Lachit Borphukan at a time when we’re marking ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav.’
“On the occasion of the festival of India’s eternal culture, eternal valour, and eternal existence,” Prime Minister Modi said, “I congratulate the tradition of terming Veer Lachit’s exploits a glorious chapter in the history of Assam.”
In the Prime Minister’s speech, he reiterated India’s desire to stick to the mentality of independence and stop feeling like it’s a slave nation. India is celebrating its cultural diversity, not just acknowledging it. It’s also not just honoring the people in history who have been ignored; it’s highlighting them, too.
The Prime Minister quoted Lachit Borphukan, who has been immortalized in our history, as the inspiration for this year’s resolutions. The Prime Minister added that remembrance of events like Lachit Borphukan’s victory against a superior Mughal force “make us familiar with the glory and identity of our history.”
“In human history that goes back 1000 years,” the Prime Minister remarked, “I can think of countless civilizations that seemed unstoppable. But throughout time, these great empires eventually crumbled.”
Recently at the UN General Assembly, Prime Minister Narendra Modi mentioned some differences between other civilizations and India. He noted that today people assess history based on the remains of civilizations, but that India still stands undefeated despite facing unexpected obstacles in its history, like the unimaginable perils of foreign invaders.
“This happened because of the fact that whenever there was a crisis, someone would emerge to solve it. In the past, saints and scholars came to protect our spiritual and cultural identity in India. People like Lachit Borphukan showed us that when all hope is lost, the immortal light of Indian life endures.” -The Prime Minister emphasized.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said India’s heritage includes Assam, which belongs to the “precious journey” of its culture. Modi said it’s an “amalgamation of thought and ideology, society and culture, and beliefs and traditions.”
Speaking about Assam and the Northeast, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that “the people of the land have witnessed Turks, Afghans and Mughals being driven away on many occasions. Even though the Mughals had captured Guwahati, it was bravehearts like Lachit Borphukan who won independence from the clutches of tyrannical rulers of the Mughal empire.”
The valiant act of Veer Lachit Borphukan at Saraighat was not just an example of unsurpassed love for the motherland, but he also had the power to unite the entire region of Assam where every citizen was ready to defend the motherland if necessary.
Lachit Borphukan is known for his bravery and fearlessness.
“The history of India is not just about slavery,” the Prime Minister interfered, “The history of India is about emerging victorious and conquering everything. It’s about the valor of humans who made it to greatness.”
He also commented on India’s strong spirit of standing against tyranny with unbelievable bravery and courage.
“Sadly, even after we gained our independence, the same history that was written to divide and control us is taught,” he said. “The agenda of foreigners in history has shifted but not yet fully eradicated.”
PM Modi said that people have persevered and resisted tyranny in every part of the country.
There are many stories of victory over tyranny during the era of repression. The mistake of not giving those events more coverage is being rectified now, the Prime Minister said.
This change is reflected in the fact that this event is taking place in Delhi, he said.
The Indian Prime Minister congratulated the Assam Government for taking steps to celebrate the legacy of its heroes.
He discussed projects that are being taken, such as a memorial in Assam to honor its heroes and generate awareness among the younger generation. He said that such projects help people know the history of sacrifice and bravery.
The Prime Minister said, “Lachit Borphukan’s life inspires us to live the mantra of ‘Nation First.’ His life teaches us that instead of bringing about nepotism and dynasty, which is what we often see in other countries around the world, our country should be supreme.”
Drawing from the life of Veer Lachit Borphukan, the Prime Minister said that “no person or relation is above nation.”
In today’s speech, the Prime Minister suggested that, to know its roots and make the right steps forward, a nation must first know its true past.
During his speech, he emphasized: “We have a responsibility to not confine our history to just a few centuries.”
The Prime Minister quoted the lines of Indian folk-singer and poet, Bharat Ratna Bhupen Hazarika, who said “only by repeatedly remembering will we give the next generation a correct view of history.”
The Prime Minister suggested that, in order to commemorate Lachit Borphukar, we create a grand theatre play that’s akin to the one on Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. He also said this will help people realize India’s significance, giving it a great boost.
Vajpayee also told the gathering that India should always be striving to improve. “We have to make India developed, and make Northeast the hub of India’s growth. I am sure that 400th anniversary of Veer Lachit Borphukan’s success will give us the strength we need.”
When the Prime Minister arrived, he took a look at the rural set-up in the West Courtyard of Vigyan Bhawan and walked around the exhibit on historical perspectives.
Before Lachit Borphukan’s picture, the Prime Minister lit a lamp and paid his respects to the brave leader.
Governor of Assam, Professor Jagadish Mukhi; Chief Minister of Assam, Dr. Himanta Biswa Sharma; Union minister for Home Affairs and IT, Sarbananda Sonowal; Member of Parliament/former Union Minister for Commerce and Industry, Commerce and Industries Minister Mohan Prakash Jha; Member of Parliament from the state of Maharashtra, Rajeev Pratap Rudy; Members of the Assam Government and other dignitaries were present at the inauguration.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has always wanted to show respect to the unsung heroes of India. So, the country started celebrating 2022 as the 400th anniversary of Lachit Borphukan’s birth in February this year. This was inaugurated by the then President of India Ram Nath Kovind during events in Guwahati.
In 1671, Lachit Borphukan led Ahom troops against an invading army of 40,000 Mughal soldiers led by Kalia Khan.
Lachit Borphukan is an important figure in the history of India for his heroic fight against Mughal forces. The Battle of Saraighat was one of the most important and inspiring battles ever fought. Lachit Borphukan’s courage brought great honor to all Indians, especially those who reside in Assam.
