Japan is Reopening to Tourists- The Japan Times reports that the country is welcoming back tourists after a year of coronavirus-induced closures—but souvenir shops and hotels are still struggling. Some shuttered souvenir shops and hotels in popular tourist areas are reopening as Japan welcomes back visitors after a year of coronavirus-induced closures, but many businesses are still struggling due to a shortage of staff.
Tourists from overseas began arriving in Japan on Thursday morning, the first since the government imposed a state of emergency last February. While some attractions, such as Tokyo Disneyland and Universal Studios Japan, remain closed, others, such as Hokkaido’s Sapporo Snow Festival and Okinawa’s beaches, have reopened to visitors.
However, many businesses in popular tourist areas are still struggling due to a lack of staff. In Osaka’s Dotonbori district, for example, only about 30% of souvenir shops were open as of Thursday morning. And while some hotels have reopened their doors to guests, many are operating at reduced capacity due to a shortage of staff. The situation is likely to improve in the coming months as more people get vaccinated and travel restrictions are lifted further.
