Elon Musk: No Change to Twitter Moderation Policy Yet?

Pratham SharmaOctober 29, 2022October 29, 2022

No Change to Twitter Moderation Policy: Twitter is now under the control of Elon Musk, who has promised to restore free speech, but has not yet clarified the exact content policies. Previously, the social network banned political misinformation and hate speech, as well as content that incites violence. The site recently banned US President Donald Trump, among other high-profile figures. Musk has not commented on specific content policies, but he has suggested a rollback in the moderation process in general, and said he would reinstate Trump on Twitter if the need arose.

Elon Musk has been an important figure on Twitter, with a massive following. However, his comments have created a lot of controversy. Many users have speculated that he will reintroduce conservative figures banned from the service. However, Musk has not yet provided any concrete information about the changes, so the speculation is high.

While Musk has defended his comments, other Twitter users are not so sure. Many Twitter users are worried that Musk will relax the rules about hate speech, misinformation, and free speech. However, Musk has assured users that he will set up a council with diverse viewpoints that will monitor the platform.

Twitter will be forming a content moderation council with widely diverse viewpoints.

No major content decisions or account reinstatements will happen before that council convenes.

Twitter’s ownership also poses a number of challenges. Its single-person control over the platform poses risks to personal safety and human rights. When one person controls the content of a social network with 400 million users, this person can have a profound impact on the community. In addition, Elon Musk has shown that he doesn’t understand the realities of platform policy at scale.

Elon Musk has also made comments implying that he wants to reinstate conservative users and former president Donald Trump. Conservatives have long complained about being censored on social media. However, there is no evidence that Twitter has a systematic anti-conservative bias. In fact, conservative influencers continue to have huge followings on Twitter.

Twitter is reportedly consulting with its trust and safety council. The group consists of 40 organizations and experts. The council does not make binding decisions, but serves as an advisory body. It also provides an appeals process if users are unhappy. The company is evaluating its options for addressing the problem. In the meantime, it is keeping their users informed. But no change to Twitter moderation policy yet?

Despite Musk’s criticisms, Twitter has not yet changed its moderation policy. Its policy still allows “bots” to post spam and other unauthentic content. While Twitter claims this is less than five percent of all accounts, Musk believes it is closer to 20 percent or more. This is based on outside research, which has shown that the reach of bots in conversations can reach 20 percent.

Twitter is now in the hands of a new set of decision makers. Its CEO has been promoting free speech and ad revenue. Twitter generates 90% of its revenue through advertising. While Google, Amazon, and Meta account for 75% of all digital advertising revenue, Twitter is expected to generate less than one percent of that by 2022.
