Chennai’s heavy rain: Sudden showers hit Chennai on Friday morning, leading to traffic congestion in the city. Several districts in Tamil Nadu, including Madurai, Pudukkotai, Thoothukudi, Namakkal, Tiruchirapalli, Mayiladuthurai, and Thanjavur also witnessed heavy rain. The Tiruvarur district administration declared a rain holiday for schools and colleges. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rains for the upcoming day.
A circulation in the atmosphere closer to the coast may increase rain intensity in the city and the suburbs at least for the next two days. Due to intense rain for three consecutive days, the Chennai subdivision received 16 cm of rain, a surplus of 266% for June. Rain over the past two days has increased the level in the reservoirs.
Chennai received an intense spell of rain on Sunday night, leaving several streets inundated in less than two hours. Nungambakkam received around 30 mm of rain, while Meenambaka received 3 mm. A Met department forecast showed that the city may receive another spell of showers on Monday. Rain on Sunday could be a signal that more thunderstorms are likely to occur in the coming days.
